Match Preview

Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona  will fight in the Copa del Rey 2020/2021 final round, Sunday (18/4/2021) at Estadio La Cartuja, Sevilla. This is a special match because it is the fourth meeting of the season, and the second in the final.

Barcelona won two meetings in La Liga. In week 2, Barcelona won 3-2 at Bilbao headquarters. Two Bilbao goals were scored by Inaki Williams and Iker Muniain. Pedri and Lionel Messi (2) scored three Barcelona goals.

In week 21, Barcelona beat Bilbao 2-1 at Camp Nou. Lionel Messi and Antoine Griezmann each contributed one goal, while Jordi Alba scored an own goal.

Between the two meetings in La Liga, Bilbao and Barcelona also met in the final of the Supercopa de Espana. Bilbao beat Barcelona 3-2 in extra time. Oscar De Marcos, Asier Villalibre, and Inaki Williams scored three Bilbao goals, while Antoine Griezmann's two goals from Barcelona were scored.

In the final, in addition to failing to become champions, Barcelona also lost Messi who was rewarded with a red card. This time, they met in the final of the Copa del Rey, aka the King's Cup.

Bilbao is the owner of 23 Copa del Rey titles, the second most. Bilbao is seven behind the record holder for the title of this competition, namely Barcelona (30).

Bilbao reached the final this season after eliminating Ibiza (2-1), Alcoyano (2-1), Real Betis (1-1, penalty 4-1), and Levante (3-2 on aggregate). Meanwhile, Barcelona has passed Cornella (2-0, extra time), Rayo Vallecano (2-1), Granada (5-3, extra time), and Sevilla (3-2 on aggregate).

Meeting Bilbao at the top of the party, Barcelona is certainly ready to fight to avenge their defeat in the Super Cup final. Can Messi lead his teammates to take revenge and lift the championship trophy?
